Follow these steps to use a Warid USB modem with Ubuntu 9.04:
- Switch on your machine and let it start up
- Connect the USB modem to the machine
- Click "System" on the top menu bar
- Select "Preferences" and then "Network connections"
- Select the "Mobile broadband" tab
- Click "Add" and follow the on-screen instructions
- Select "Uganda" from the country listing and set the operator to "MTN"
- In the summary window, under "Name," type WARID and click "Apply"
- You should now be back at the Network Connections window. Highlight "MTN" and click the "Edit" tab
- Change the connection name to "WARID" and set the APN to "web.waridtel.co.ug" (NOTE: a list of all Ugandan service provider APN settings can be found here)
- Select the "IPv4 settings" tab. Under "DNS servers" please put 41.221.81.132, 41.221.87.2
- Click on apply and you will be able to connect to the Internet freely!
These steps will generally work for most Huawei brand USB modems. If your system has trouble detecting your USB modem, type the following command in a command-line terminal:
sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch
This will install a small piece of software that helps your computer recognize USB modems with built-in storage devices.
